clxxxvi + 326 pp. Illus with geometric figs. A classic of exposition of the "great geometer", meant to be useful to modern mathematicians who might not be able to read the original ancient Greek. Includes chapters before the main work on Archimedes background, manuscripts and principal editions, relation of Archimedes to his predecessors, arithmetic in Archimedes, on the problems known as "neoseis", cubic equations, anticipations of the integral calculus, terminology of Archimedes. Then the book proper follows with the works: On the sphere and cylinder; Measurement of a circle; on conoids and spheroids; on spirals, on the equilibrium of planes; the sand-reckoner; quadrature of the parabola; on floating bodies; book of Lemmas; the cattle problem. Blue cloth is blindstamped, silver gilt on spine is legible. Spine is very faded, has top/bottom chips and two 1"x1" tears to the cloth, cloth on the back board is severely faded with a dark stain, and has some crinkles to the fabric. Binding is tight, interior end papers a bit foxed, text is clean and nice. The spine and back board on this copy are not beautiful, the interior is quite good. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
