Price: $11,999.00

A magnificently bound complete first edition first issue, in folio, of Kaempfer's important work on Japan, one of the most influential histories to shape the West's conception of that country for over 150 years. The book contains all 45 plates called for, all in good condition, as well as both title pages and the additional title page containing symbols of various clans in Japan. It has been magnificently bound in beautiful full paneled calf, with period appropriate gilt work to the spines and morocco labels by a master binder. This is the scarce 1st edition 1st issue copy of 1727, which does not contain the "2nd Appendix" which was included in the 2nd issue of the work. The books are large folios measuring 15 x 9. They are magnificently rebound in full period calf leather with panels and blind tooling, five raised bands to the spines with era-appropriate gilt devices in the panels, red and green morocco labels, all in fine condition. End papers are renewed. The book is complete with all 45 plates as called for, many folding. Plates V and VI are out of order but still present. Both title pages are present as is the beautifully printed frontis title. Pagination is [12] Lii, 392 [4] 20 plates; [4] 393-612, 76, [4], 25 plates, [6]. One page has a short marginal tear, 2 pages have small marginal chips, page 39 of the appendix has a repaired tear at the top of the page with a small hole in the header, there is occasional browning and foxing, mostly at the beginning and end of the books, pages 241-245 have a bit more browning as well as some pencil notations. Throughout there is the slightest hint of browning/staining at the top edge - you can see this in the photos - but it is minor. Paper is crisp and wavy as is normal with this book. The plates are in good condition with just a bit of browning and age, the large folding map has the beginning of separation at the bottom gutter. Contains the list of subscribers, main titles in red and black. Binding is tight and firm. Engelbert Kaempfer (September 16, 1651 - November 2, 1716) was a German naturalist, physician, and writer known for his tour of Russia, Persia, India, South-East Asia, and Japan between 1683 and 1693. His History of Japan, published posthumously in 1727, was the chief source of Western knowledge about the country throughout the 18th and mid-19th centuries when Japan was closed to foreigners. At Kaempfer's death his mostly unpublished manuscripts were purchased by Sir Hans Sloane, and conveyed to England. Among them was a History of Japan, translated from the manuscript into English by Sloane's librarian John Gaspar Scheuchzer (1702-1729). It was first published at London, in 2 vols. , in 1727. The German version was not published until 50 years later, in 1777. A beautiful copy of this important and delightful work. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall
