71 of 72 leaves, missing first blank. Leaf numbered 41 has been supplied in very old manuscript on laid paper. Small folio (11 x 8") rebound in old vellum with renewed label and endpapers. Corresponds to Goff R264 including first line of text corrected to "temporum" and "coplectens." 9-72 foliated 1-64. Table in 3 columns. 50 lines and head-line. Gothic type. Woodcut ornamental initials: 10-line initial G Genealogical diagrams with printed woodcut or metalcut roundels throughout. 25 woodcuts repeated to 64, of which 19 cuts of town views including Athens, Troy, Rome, Byzantium, Babylon, Lyon, Berne. 2 cuts of the Temple of Solomon, and one cut each of the Creation, Noah's Ark with rainbow, the Tower of Babel, and a large cut showing Jesus surrounded by roundels naming the 4 gospels. Includes the first known printed view of Venice showing the Piazza San Marco as seen from the Grand Canale with gondolas. Second Ratdolt edition of this popular and important chronological history of the world, this version, continued to May 1481 when Sultan Mohammed II, conqueror of Constantinople, died and, according to Rolewinck, descended to hell. A complex printing feat, the chronology measures time from both the beginning of Creation and from the birth of Christ. Wonderful illustrations. The book is in good antiquarian condition. Newly rebound in old vellum, tight and secure. The 7-leaf table at the front has many old repairs with staining and worm holes. There is some humidity staining and worming throughout. Repairs also to numbered leaf 15 and a larger worming hole in numbered leaf 24 and 25 affecting text. There are numerous pointing hands and occasional very old marginalia. The most interesting feature of this particular copy is that leaf 41 has been replaced in manuscript in its entirety, including roundels and illustration -- but the handdrawn illustration is the merman with sun, moon and four legged man from the 1488 Strasbourg edition. A handsome unusual copy of this wide-margin 1481 Ratdolt edition of Rolewinck's chronological history of the world starting from the creation and then through the biblical, classical, and medieval ages, right up to 1481. ; Woodcuts; 11 x 8; 72 pages
