Indian Sketches, Taken During an Expedition to the Pawnee and Other Tribes of American Indians. In Two Volumes. Vol. I. & II

By: Irving, John T., Jr.

Price: $175.00

Quantity: 1 available

xi + 278 pp and viii + 301 pp. The "best" first British edition. The author accompanied Commissioner Ellsworth in the summer of 1833 on this expedition to the country lying between the Platte and Kansas Rivers. Rich in the traditions, history and "peculiarities" of the native tribes inhabiting that region. Native peoples described include the Shawanese, Delawares, the Sac, Kanzas, Kickapoos, Pawnees, Otoe, Grand PawneeTappages, Loups, Shian, etc. Calf leather spines are chipped and worn, volume I especially is missing over 1/2 the spine and front board is detaching. Leather corners are rubbed. Interior of both books has signature dated 1849 "Robert Fowler, with W.H.Goddard's best writer" (if anyone can enlighten me as to what that means, please do!). End pages on both volumes a little foxed and there are one or two very small stains/foxing in the text, but otherwise very clean and presentable, book blocks sound. Excellent candidates for rebinding, priced low to reflect condition of the spines.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
