Important 1592 Italian translation of Greek mathematician and engineer Hero (or Heron) of Alexander's Pneumatics, which describes his various mechanical inventions including the siphon, fire-engine, water-organ and other steam, air and water driven devices. The translator, Alessandro Giorgi, was the court mathematician to the Duke of Urbino to whom the book is dedicated. [4], 82 ff, 90 woodcut illustrations of various mechanical inventions. With 19th century vellum with spine title, renewed endpapers, title page has some damage and has been remounted, occasional worming in margins, some occasional dampstaining, the two leaves of the Tavola have worm tracks affecting text and some edge chipping, one leaf with a short clean tear repaired, but otherwise clean and sturdy. Hero or Heron of Alexandria was a famous first century mathematician and inventor, creator of what may have been the first steam engine in history. The book contains the first illustration of the problem of filling a cistern with pipes, the first vending machine (for holy water!), a wind operated organ, a syringe-like device, and many other mechanical devices, many beautifully illustrated, some for the first time. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 164 pages
