Tresor des Remedes Secretz Livre Physic,Medical,Alchymic, & Dispensatif de toutes sbustantiales liqueurs, & appareil de vins de diverses saveurs, necessaire a toutes gens, principalement a Medicins,Chirurgiens, & Apothicaires

[xlviii], 440, [vi] pp Nice engraved woodcuts of various distillations. In a 1700s full calf binding with five raised bands. With occasional marginalia, some humidity staining throughout, very occasional worming mostly at the indices in front, some foxing throughout. Title page is quite worn and stained with old ownership marks and inscriptions in brown ink, an intriguing bookplate, nice little initials throughout. Binding has a bit of corner/edge rubbing and moderate wear but is otherwise quite handsome and sturdy. No blank in front, end papers appear old but probably co-temporal with binding. This is Gessner's (1516-1565) anonymous French edition of his work on distillation, alchemy, medicine and therapeutics, of his thesaurus of "secret remedies" for surgeons and apothecaries. The rights to publication had been given to Arnoullet (and his widow) in Lyon who published their first in 1555 with numerous woodcuts, many of which remain here. The great Swiss scientist gives his methods of distillation especially for making "wines" necessary for medical treatment, along with hidden knowledge of extraction, including such delights as "oyle of scorpions distilled" and "oyle of antes egges and the Nettles distilled together" as the first English edition would have it. The book includes distillations which make it possible to compose drugs from various elements such as plants, woods, metals such as lead, gold or antimony, or organic substances such as animal parts, excrement and blood. Another section focuses on fomentations and extracts for syrups, aromatic wines and perfumes. Gessner sought to integrate modern chemistry with ancient and medieval knowledge. The book was wildly popular and went through any number of editions, particularly because of the near mania for distillation in the 16th century which is why it is odd that it is so scarce now. This is a handsome copy, about good-plus, with some age but still attractive and highly usable. ; Woodcuts; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 440 pages
