195 pp + 40 plates + 8 plates. This is not the reprint of this important book, but the original edition. To quote, "The most important and extensive publication of the 19th century dealing with Phasmatodea is undoubtly John Obadiah WESTWOOD´s Catalogue of Orthopterous Insects in the Collection of the British Museum of 1859 which already listed 39 genera, comprising 471 species in two main groups, adults winged or wingless. Many species were described for the first time and especially the very detailed descriptions and excellent 48 black and white plates showing a wide range of species make it remain an invaluable work for the identification of phasmids." Dark tan linen covers are general a bit grubby, corners worn, spine is faded and cloth has been removed where once a library number probably was. Interior hinges are splitting, end papers are quite oxidized, and crispy. Title page foxed with two private collection stamps including one embossed, and as well there is a 2" long "burn" mark at the top edge . Introduction page also has the collection stamp and a 1" long hole in the stamp, not affecting text. The text/description pages are all clean and unmarked, a bit of foxing, more near the beginning and end than in the middle, there are some pencil check marks in the index and description of the plates. . The plates follow the text and are in two sections. The first few plates have a fair amount of foxing, then the plates are quite clean, then the foxing starts up again at plate 22, 30-36 are clean again, then some foxing. From 36 on there is a trace of damp staining at the top of each plate. The supplemental plates were printed on a different paper stock than the first section and the paper has oxidized and is quite browned. The last plate and last fly page have been archivally re-attached and show some staining at the gutter. Book block is solid. Very hard to find. ; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
