420 pp. Frontis plate. The scarce 2nd English edition of this book, in its original bind, first published in Latin in Germany in 1741 to avoid the Norwegian censors. One of the first science fiction/fantasy books, this satire pokes fun at religion, cultural mores, governments and many other sacred cows. It posits a universe formed of concentric circles with the sun at the center -- which Klim finds by falling down a large hole. Original binding, black leather spine with 5 raised bands decorated with gilt is worn, spine label mostly gone. Front board detached, marble paper scuffed, leather corners worn. All pages up to 3 are still connected to the front board, page 3/4 is loose with some associated chipping and wear at the fore-edge. Rest of the pages attached to the book block. Some foxing and general toning, but otherwise clean and unmarked. Priced low for condition, but very restorable. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
