vi, 594 & 586 pp. Indice. Con Appendici Storico-Geografiche compilate da Franc. Gherardi Dragomanni. Complete 11 books of Matteo's chronicle completed by his son Filippo. Half leather with dark brown leather spines with 5 raised bands, some rubbing at joints and tips, blue marbled boards just a little rubbed at edges, interior some foxing, top corner of each title page neatly clipped out, otherwise clean and unmarked. Sturdy. Part of a series "Collezione di Storici e Cronisti Italiani" but stand alone. Handsome set. Matteo was completing his brother Giovanni's (c1280-1348) chronicle of Florentine history, with especial emphasis on the times they were living in. Giovanni died of the plague and the work was continued by Matteo until he, too, was struck down in 1363, at which time his son finished the chronicle. While some of the general history has been considered suspect, the account of life in Florence, Italy, during Matteo's lifetime is invaluable to historians and his account of the Black Death that took his brother and up to 60% of the population of the City is considered stunning first hand evidence of the devastation. This is a scarce and attractive Italian edition of Matteo's work. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
