97 pp. Illustrated, with tissue guards. Limited edition of 335, this is #173. It appears that this book was published in 1923, although the date on the title page is 1920. A lovely and hard to find book, in French, with scenes from the life of the great late medieval Florentine monk and martyr Savonarola. Each scene is begun with a moody black and white/half tone sketch. Each "scene" is developed as a dialogue, sometimes including Savonarola ("Frere Jerome"), sometimes his disciples, other times the great players involved in his rise and horrible fall, such as the Pope, the Medicis, Borgias, etc. It includes the horrendous scene of his torture, and his wonderful retort when he was about to be hanged over the fire, when his accuser and executioner told him that he was henceforth removed from the Church Militant and the Church Triumphant. Said he, "Not from the Church Triumphant, that is beyond your power." Buff linen covers with dark blue leather embossed spine is bit grubby, worn at the corners. Spine strip is mostly missing and what remains has lifted, gilt title on cover and spine still present and bright. Interior paper is a bit toned, binding shaken but still holding. Most of the tissue guards are still present, one is quite crumpled, all are laid in not bound in. A very difficult book to find, still handsome if somewhat fatigued.; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
