Justin Martyr (also Justin the Martyr, Justin of Caesarea, Justin the Philosopher, Latin Iustinus Martys) (100B165) was an early Christian apologist and saint. His works represent the earliest surviving Christian apologies of notable size. He was born around the turn of the century in modern day Palestine. He claimed to have been raised a Gentile, and in his search for truth he studied with the Stoics, Aristotelians, Pythagoreans, and Platonists. Impressed by the devotion of Christian martyrs, he was eventually converted to Christianity by an old Christian who taught him about the Hebrew prophets. According to Justin, Christianity filled the highest aspirations of Platonic philosophy and was, therefore, the "true philosophy." Charles Ashton (1665 – 1752) was an English churchman and academic, Master of Jesus College, Cambridge from 1701.Ashton's published works are not numerous. In 1768 appeared an edition of Justin Martyr's Apologiæ prepared by Frederick Keller, fellow of Jesus College, from papers that Ashton left at his death: all Ashton's manuscripts had been bequeathed to Keller. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 302 pages
