The book is in fair-good antiquarian condition. It is a small octavo measuring 5” x 3”, [16], 191 [1] ff, includes index, OCLC 71192158. The vellum is smooth and attractive, cracked with a lack on the spine, old manuscript title. Interior front end papers have extensive doodles and marks, paper has been cut so it is slightly aslant but the headers and text are not affected. The sewing is starting to break and will need repair if the book is to be read regularly. Otherwise paper is strong and clean, very little foxing and no marks. Pompeius Trogus (lived 1st century bc) was a Celtic Gaul who gained Roman citizenship and became an important Roman historian. This is his most famous work, often called the “Historiae Philippicae” because it focused on the Macedonian empire founded by Philip II and traced the ancient kingdoms from Assyria and Persia to Macedonia and the Hellenistic monarchies. The original of this work is lost, but its character is conveyed here in Justin’s “epitome”, which preserves about one-sixth of the original – the prologi (summaries of books) and some fragments.Justin (Latin: Marcus Iunianius Iustinus c.2nd century) was a Latin historian who lived under the Roman Empire. Justin aimed only to preserve the parts he felt most important or interesting about Pompeius Trogus's work, with the last recorded event being the recovery of Roman standards from the Parthians in 20 bc. In the manuscripts of Justin's works, however, a separate series of summaries (prologi) of the original work have been preserved. Even in their present incomplete state the works are often an important authority for the ancient history of the East. ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 191 pages
