Salutati, the famous Florentine chancellor and one of the most important humanists of the early Renaissance devoted his spare moments to his De Laboribus Herculis. The first book is a defence of poetry. The rest is an allegorical interpretation of the labours of Hercules as they are narrated by ancient authors. He draws largely on Ovid, whome he calls a porta -- a door that opened the treasures of ancient literature to him. Salutati is medieval but he belongs to the Renaissance -- in fact, he served as a bridge the two periods. ; Thesaurus Mundi; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
