Xvi, 250, xlv pp. Frontis plate of E. Faber with tissue guard. Tall octavo. In what appears to be original 3/4 black leather with black shagreen cloth boards, gilt to spine. Spine has been repaired with original cover laid down. Interior has book plate of Sir Edmund Walker (1848-1924) a Canadian banker and cultural philanthropist who was a force behind the founding of the Univ. Of Toronto, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and much more. Paper is lightly toned, a small dark smudge at the gutter at the last blank, edges are marbled, clean and unmarked inside, with solid binding. A very nice copy of this scarce title with nice provenance. 1st Edition. , printed at the American Presbyterian Mission Press. With four appendixes, including The Illegitimate States; The Illegitimate Dynasties; The six great chancellors of Ts'in; and Studies in Giles' Chinese Biographical Dictionary. Ernst Faber (1839-1899) worked in China as a Christian missionary and was fluent in Chinese, German, English and a number of other languages. He saw himself as an intercultural agent who gradually came to be a Christian humanist working with the Chinese rather than necessarily trying to convert them and he thought that "the doctrine of the Gospel was in harmony with the mind of China."
