144 pp. Illustrated with woodcuts. Frontis with a double cut showing each of the brothers in their native environs and then wonderful evocative woodcuts are sprinkled throughout. A 12mo bound in what looks to be 19th century ribbed brown cloth, quite plain and neat, bit faded at spine and edges. Interior has brown marbled end papers. Some foxing throughout, bit of damp (? ) staining at the top corner of the first 50 pages or so, some pages very closely trimmed, occasionally affecting text. ESTC N51744. With a lovely flourished owner signature on the verso of the title page "William Gardner his Book" and the same signature on the last page with "Moreton" and "Finis" added. Sturdy and clean. Oddly quite scarce as this romance was exceedingly popular from it's beginning as a French "chanson de geste" in medieval times and it's popularity continued to the modern age. The Prince and the Pauper is a similar story of twins, separated at birth, who are raised in markedly different circumstances but then come together at maturity to right the wrongs of their fates and of the surrounding world. Lots of fun. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 144 pages
