[14], 241 (of 245) ff. Lacking ff. 74-77. Printers mark on title page (at the sign of the Pelican) , full page woodcut engraving in the prelims. In full old limp vellum with hand titled spine including a contemporaneous library title. This was a new edition with corrections and revisions supervised by Bouchet, with his additions from 1524 to 1545. Vellum is wrinkled and has a rich warm brown patina, some crackling and wear at extremities. Interior blanks are missing. Front and back pastedowns are cracked and worn, one can see an old paper manuscript under the front pastedown, with a modern clipping tipped in. Title page is remounted, corners worn, an owner inscription and date of 1607 in brown ink. Second leaf partially detached, edges rough on leaves at front and rear. Marginalia and notes in what appear to be the same hand throughout, with extensive underlining, check marks, and notes throughout -- the book was cared for but used extensively by this scholar. At the rear, there is a note that an "Alexander Norin" died aged 75 years but I can't make out the date. There is a clean tear in the margin of FXCV, hole in the margin of CIII, corners off on CLXX and CLXXXI, and the last leaf has worming and damage to the corners, not affecting text. Jean Bouchet (1476-1557) was a French poet and writer born in Poitiers. His Annales was a prose chronicle of his native province and was popular, printed in a number of editions up to 1644, including this one reissued and revised by the author himself. In the book he traced Aquitaine's past, from its mythical beginning as the offspring of Hercules, through medieval times up to the time of publication. He was particularly interested in clearning the name of Eleanor of Aquitaine and tried to show that her supposed sexual misconduct was as a result of Louis VII's jealous and vindictive nature -- unfortunately, his attempt on the queen's behalf didn't do much! No other copies of the 1545 for sale. A scarce copy of this interesting and important history, and one with a story to tell of the scholar who laboured so long over its many pages. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall
