All boards are firmly attached. Pages show some age toning but are sharply printed, book blocks solid, pages firmly bound. This is a scarce and handsome 3 volume folio set of the complete ancient and medieval chronicles by the important medieval Dominican friar and saint, Antoninus of Florence; who served as archbishop and an ambassador of Florence under the Medicis. This fascinating and comprehensive history begins with Adam and Eve and ends with medieval and Renaissance Florence under the Medicis. It is handsomely bound in full leather and includes beautiful engraved head and tail pieces and engraved initials. Scarce to the trade. . Antoninus' fascinating history, here in the original Latin is at the border between medieval chronicle styles and a newer Renaissances style - it is only now being studied intensively. He is a most valuable source for the medieval history of his own times, particularly because he played a central role in one of the most important cities of his era -- Florence under the powerful Medicis. His chronicle is packed with accounts of ancient and medieval history, ranging widely over Rome of the Caesars, the barbarian invasions, Charlemagne, the Crusades, accounts of Tatars and Mongols, and much detail on the Italian and Florentine wars and the fall of Byzantine Constantinople, which was captured by the Turks in the last years of Antoninus' life In addition, there are detailed sections on various great Christian writers and mystics, including mystics such as Catherine of Siena and philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas. Antoninus' history is particularly interesting because he himself was a man of affairs; with a deep practical knowledge of how society worked. He is regarded as an early economist and sociologist as well as an ascetic (he divided his wages into three; giving two-thirds away; he lived very simply in an age of Medicean munificence) ; interestingly, he also was a opponent of lending at interest, then beginning to transform medieval Europe. Heavy for international shipping, please inquire. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall
