Vol. I has undergone the most wear, dark red library tape on spine with white lettering, interior reinforced with tape at hinges, last few leaves threatening to come out but holding, large folding map is fragile with chipping and wear at folds. The other volumes are much fresher and the folding maps are quite nice, again with very little wear or marking to the pages. Vol. 1 : The Native Nations; The Phoenicians and Greek Settlements. Vol. II : From the Beginning of the Greek Settlement to the Beginning of Athenian Intervention. Vol. III : The Athenian and Carthaginian Invasions. Priced low to reflect condition but scarce in all 4 volumes and still respectable and readable. Heavy for international shipping. Freeman was an Oxonian, professor of history and quite well thought of in his times. This work, in common with his works generally, is distinguished by exhaustiveness of treatment and research, critical ability, and general accuracy. He was almost exclusively a political historian, and his works were infused with the personal insights he gained from his practical experience of people and institutions. Sold with all faults. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
