19-512 pp (should be [xxiv] 552 pp) . No title page but conforms to the 1592 edition, OCLC 1181314935. Black letter, Gothic type. Newly bound in smooth calf, renewed end papers. Binding is fresh and clean, book block is solid, the book starts with leaf D2, which has some chipping around the edges, and ends with LL8, which has a corner off, not affecting text. Paper is toned and a bit soft but otherwise clean. Some pages trimmed close at headers. A scarce and important early English edition of Phillipe de Mornay's Christian and very Protestant apology. Mornay was a prominent French Protestant theologian, the "Pope of the Huguenots," who was also a close advisor to Henry of Navarre. He escaped the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, fled to England where he became fast friends with Sir Philip Sidney, who had also been at the Massacre. Sidney was also a militant Protestant, as well as being a renowned poet and playwright. While he was working on the translation of this work he was fighting against the Catholics in Spain, took a bullet wound to the leg and died of gangrene a month later. His funeral procession in England was one of the largest ever staged. Not complete but close, an attractive copy of an important "English incunable," and a fascinating look at early Protestantism. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
